Durgapur is located in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district, on the banks of the Damodar River, just before it reaches the Bengal alluvial plains. The terrain is undulated. The Raniganj coalfields’ coal-bearing area is just beyond Durgapur, with some sections intruding. Until recently, the region was densely forested, and remnants of the original Sal and eucalyptus forests can still be seen.
Durgapur is the preferred entry point to Bankura, Birbhum ( Bolpur, Rampurhat, Suri ), and Purulia districts. SH 9 originates from Muchipara in the district, and NH 19 (old numbering: NH 2) passes through the city jurisdiction. NH 14 (formerly NH 60) passes through Pandabeswar’s northwestern suburbs before passing through Raniganj and heading towards Odisha. It is one of the few cities in the world with an Asian Highway (AH) that runs straight through the city limits. Via Korea, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran, the AH1 connects Japan and Turkey.
